About Course

This book version of the course is primarily designed for carers. However, because carers daily work is shaped by the actions of local authorities, care agencies and families drawing on care, these groups are also encouraged to read their respective sections to understand how they can help remove the modern slavery elements that affect care workers.

What Will You Learn?

  • Gain a clear understanding of how UK labour law, care commissioning and immigration frameworks interact to create or prevent exploitation.
  • Explore the limitations of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 in protecting the care workforce and how its interpretation could evolve.
  • Examine the concept of “decent work” and how it applies to carers, including pay, rest, autonomy and dignity.
  • Analyse sector-specific risks, from agency profit models to family-based exploitation and visa-linked dependency.
  • Learn from real testimonies and research that reveal the hidden structures of coercion within everyday employment practices.
  • Understand how evidence, dialogue and collective advocacy can inform better policy, regulation and commissioning decisions.
  • Engage with the new sector-specific definition of modern slavery proposed by Social Care Research Ltd, developed through comparative analysis and informed by international labour standards, which you will explore in detail in Module 5.
